Windows 7, cannot detect wireless networks.

15/01/2010

Since I just posted my issues with upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10, I figured I would also share my recent issue with Windows 7.

  • Problem: Windows was unable to detect any wireless networks. Stated card is fully functional, just that no networks are within range.
  • Reason: It turns out Windows 7 comes with the option to allow the computer to disable the Wireless Adapter to save power enabled. I did not know this. For some reason my computer decided it would turn off the card, and not turn it back on. I did not know this. I went through the processes of reinstalling drivers, checking if my card was damaged, and checking all off the switches (actual switch and button combination). Nothing.
  • Solution: Going to “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections,” going to the properties on the Wireless Network Connection. Then selecting Configure, clicking the “Power Management” tab, and unchecking “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

So there you have it. My recent issue in Windows 7, and what I did to fix it.
