Update – Ubuntu All the Way

12/05/2010

It has been about 2 weeks and so far I have only strayed from Ubuntu on two occasions. The first being when I was tinkering with my android device and needed a windows only program that did not like Wine, and the second while at a LAN party. I probably could have not swapped for the LAN party, but I already had the games installed and working in Windows, and figured it would be a waste of time and HDD space to install them into Ubuntu as well.

Mainly the only things I am doing with my computer right now is internet browsing, word processing, and music. I download all my music using a different PC, running a stripped version of Win XP, and listen to the files using Amarok. By far my favorite audio player. For internet browsing I am using Chromium, and it is doing great, exspecially for the fact that it syncs my bookmarks with my other computers and OS’s. For the word processing I am running OpenOffice. I used to run this in Windows as well, until I jumped on the Micro$oft Office wagon for ease of going to and from school.

Will give more information on my Pure (almost) Ubuntu experience.

Asus u81 upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10

14/01/2010

I am posting this for the reason that I found my same problem all over the internet, but not with my solution.

This is the problem: Upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10. Afterwards was unable to find any video card drivers, unable to run Compiz, and very horrible performance over all.

Reason: I had edited my Grub settings, changing the name on my Windows 7 option, and making it the default selection on boot. I did not allow grub to update the file, so the only options I had were old.

Solution: Upgrade to Grub2, allowing all changes. Running perfectly now.

Sharing your Thunderbird and Firefox data between Ubuntu and Windows

25/09/2009

After doing this I just HAD to post this guide. Using this I now do not have to worry about installing plug-in or syncing favorites between Windows and Ubuntu! The guide itself is a little old, but it works perfectly.

The only issue I had come up was one of my plug-ins did not work in both Operating Systems. Not a problem, it was old and unused :)

So, go give it a try!

Compiz on Ubuntu 9.04 (on Asus U81A)

24/09/2009

After about a hour of tinkering I now have Compiz set up to my liking. If you happen to have read my previous (and very old) post about running Compiz on my Presario, I did it much the same. Actually, aside from not having to tinker with the install, it is the same. Ha.

For those that do not know what Compiz is, it is a desktop effect program. Tons of things are capable with it. If you would like to see it in action scroll on down and click the Youtube link.

Basically, for my Asus U81A, all I had to do was click Applications>Add/Remove, search for “compiz” and install the “Advance Dedsktop Effects Settings.” Before doing so, I did have to enable multiverse in Software Sources. And that was it.

I plan on adding a video, as soon as I find a desktop recorder for Ubuntu that I like. (Recommendations are cool!)

Update: Since I am having trouble recording my desktop without stutters and such, here is a youtube video showing off tons of the effects Compiz is capable of: “Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Beta with Compiz effects Test.”

Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04

23/09/2009

After a horrible run in with a bad partition re-size I am now running Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04, with a partition in the middle holding stuff, such as music and pictures.

I recommend this to anyone that runs both. Just one heads up, make sure to be plugged in (if you have a laptop), and defrag before hand…Lol. I would not wish my luck on anyone else!
